I segreti della scatola magica FOTOGRAFIA PER L'ACQUA
“In un posto lontano, ma non troppo, ci sono bambini che crescono liberi come alberi, selvaggi, in mezzo alla natura, arida come il deserto. La maggior parte di essi non possiede nemmeno una bottiglia di plastica. In molti villaggi scarseggia la presenza dell’acqua. Come quegli alberi, che anche in condizioni estreme di aridità, crescono , sopravvivono alla siccità e alla stagione delle piogge, quei bambini si raccontano e ci raccontano la loro Acqua.” Ricoperto per due terzi circa dal deserto, il Mali è caratterizzato da un paesaggio piuttosto arido. L’unico corso d’acqua presente è il Niger, che per buona parte del suo percorso segna il confine tra il Sahara e il Sahel. Le temperature medie sono molto alte, attorno ai 40 gradi. Durante i mesi invernali il Mali è spazzato dall’harmattan, il vento caldo del deserto. Si può sostenere che le condizioni climatiche più avverse si trovino in questo paese. Il tasso di mortalità infantile è pari all’11% ed è spesso causato da infezioni dovute alla mancanza d’acqua potabile. I numeri che si riflettono sull’indice di sviluppo umano, collocano il Mali al 174esimo posto su 177 stati. Il progetto è stato realizzato grazie al sostegno di Alì 2000 onlus. Alì2000 onlus è un associazione no-profit, sviluppa l’accesso all’acqua nei villaggi dell’Africa Occidentale ed in particolare in Mali, dal 2000 ad oggi ha realizzato circa 45 pozzi a grande diametro nell’area di Bandiagara al confine con il Burkina Faso. Queste foto fanno parte di un progetto, sotto la mia direzione artistica, dove bambini dei villaggi di Niongonò, Bolimbà e Pah (Pays Dogon – Repubblica del Mali) si sono ritratti con delle fotocamere Fuji Instax (tipo Polaroid) ed hanno fotografato liberamente il loro ambiente con delle piccole fotocamere usa e getta.

Secrets from the magic box - PHOTOGRAPHS FOR A CLEAN WATER
In the context of developing countries, more than a billion people lack access to safe drinking water. In rural areas of Western Africa, such as Mali, children grow up free as wild trees in barren areas of land. And just like those trees, children survive both the dry and the rainy seasons. These photographs want to tell stories about "water". That is, stories about children and their feeling and experiences regarding "water". The children of Niongonò, Bolimbà and Pah (Pays Dogon – République du Mali) have been drawing and portraying with each other by means of polaroid-type cameras, freely shooting around their village. Further, each child has been portrayed next to a tree (or plant) holding either a bottle, water tank or any other properrecipient. Such photos have been shot in analogic with a 4x5 folding camera (Horseman 45FA). The final object is a picture, which aims at providing observers with the sensation of being in such kind of paradise, growing up like trees in desert without a constant access to water... The project was made in collaboration with Alì 2000 Onlus , a non profit organization dedicated to develop access to drinkable water in rural areas of Western Africa and particularly in Mali. Since year 2000 Alì 2000 has built over 45 large-diameter waterwells most of which in the area of Bandiagara near the border with Burkina Faso (www.ali2000.it). Having three fundamental elements in extremely fragile situations, my eyes, my camera, and my heart, helps me to synthesize the reality, filtering it out into a vision that goes beyond the documentary scope. The aim is to let the subject captured in the picture fell emotions, as well as the observers and, of course, me. This represent a persistent give and take, a strict connection between photography and solidarity to make art accessible to everybody. In such situations, art becomes performance of those people who want speak about their way of being human.
